Dr. Zoë Harrold

Dr. Harrold received her Ph.D. in Geomicrobiology from the Earth and Space Sciences Department at the University of Washington in Seattle. Her experience includes research at the nexus of the bio-, hydro- and litho- spheres. Dr. Harrold is passionate about earth and environmental sciences and initiatives, research science, policy development, education, quantitative data-driven studies, and the outdoors.

Current Projects

Environmental and Community Initiatives (2018 – Present)
Environmental remediation, protection, and education efforts are interconnected initiatives that are foundational to inciting environmental stewardship. Dr. Harrold is committed to helping organizations animate their environmental goals by providing project scoping and data collection consulting as well as grant and report writing services. She is currently working with:

Truckee Bike Park (TBP) to fund park development and Next-Level programming.

Clean Up The Cayes (CUTC) to fund their 72-mile circumnavigational SCUBA cleanup of Lake Tahoe and develop a comprehensive data collection plan.

NV Woodchucks to support their community donation programs and grant writing needs.

Desert Research Institute (DRI), Reno NV on microplastic research method development and analysis in Lake Tahoe.

Energy Policy (2006 – Present)
Dr. Harrold supports policy review and comment drafting for the Green Power Institute (GPI). She is currently supporting CA energy policy development for the Renewable Performance Standard (RPS), Distribution Resources Plan (DRP), and Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) proceedings, as well as the Wildfire Mitigation Plans (WMP).

Life Detection Instrumentation R&D (2017 – Present)
Astrobiology requires what NASA coins “agnostic” life-detection approaches that transcend Earth-biased methodologies and enable remote life detection on other worlds in our solar system. Dr. Harrold is supporting R&D efforts by researchers at Desert Research Institute (DRI), Reno, NV and École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland to refine, test, and validate emerging life detection technology for astrobiological and medical applications.

Microbe-water-rock Nexus (2008 – Present)
Dr. Harrold has over 12 years of experience designing microbe-water-rock experiments to elucidate the influence of microbes on aqueous geochemical processes and mineralogy. Her work includes numerous peer-reviewed publications and continues as a peer-reviewer for academic publications and through external technical review services with researchers at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
